Follow The Directions

01

Step

Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. (Prep time: 2 minutes)

02

Step

Cut the croissants into 1-inch cubes (approximately 4 cups, loosely packed). Spread the croissant cubes evenly across the bottom of the prepared pan. Sprinkle uniformly with shredded Gruyere cheese, then the diced cooked ham. (Prep time: 10 minutes)

03

Step

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sour cream, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until the mixture is smooth and well combined. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

04

Step

Carefully pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered croissants, cheese, and ham in the baking pan. Ensure all ingredients are moistened. (Prep time: 3 minutes)

05

Step

Cover the baking pan tightly with aluminum foil. Refrigerate for a minimum of 8 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the croissants to absorb the custard. (Refrigeration time: 8+ hours)

06

Step

The next day, remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and let it sit on the counter while the oven preheats to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). (Preheat time: 15 minutes)

07

Step

Uncover the casserole and place it in the center of the preheated oven. Bake until the casserole is set and a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean, approximately 45 to 55 minutes. (Bake time: 45-55 minutes)

08

Step

Remove the baked casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before cutting into serving pieces. Garnish with freshly chopped green onions before serving.

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a sprinkle of nutmeg or a pinch of red pepper flakes to the egg mixture.
Feel free to substitute other cheeses, such as cheddar or Swiss, based on your preference.
If you don't have croissants, brioche or challah bread work beautifully as well. Adjust baking time accordingly.
This bake is also delicious with sauteed vegetables like mushrooms, spinach or bell peppers. Add them to the casserole with the ham.
For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave.
