Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with generously salted cold water. Bring to a boil over high heat. (5 minutes)

Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes. A paring knife should slide easily into the center of a potato cube.

Drain the potatoes thoroughly in a colander. Return the drained potatoes to the pot.

Add the softened butter and cream cheese to the warm potatoes. Use an electric mixer to beat until the butter is almost completely melted and the mixture is starting to come together. (2 minutes)

Gradually add the warm milk and sour cream, continuing to beat until the potatoes are smooth, light, and fluffy. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the potatoes gluey. (3 minutes)

Season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

For an even richer flavor, try using heavy cream instead of milk.
A potato ricer or food mill can also be used for an ultra-smooth texture. Avoid using a blender or food processor, as they can overwork the potatoes and make them gummy.
Feel free to experiment with other flavorings such as roasted garlic, fresh herbs (chives, rosemary, thyme), or a pinch of nutmeg.
Yukon Gold potatoes are recommended for their naturally buttery flavor and creamy texture.
